Now this is just my own guessing of what was Cynthia like in her early days as a Pokemon Trainer.
Cynthia has changed clothes, this is after winning a Conference and before competing against the Elite Four and defeating the former Sinnoh Champion. Her age... perhaps in her early teen years? 13 or 14?
Now one would at least be very happy that they made so much progress in their days as trainers, but somehow... Cynthia doesn't look all that happy...

Sound like the soon to be champ travelling partners either couldn't get this far or had to leave on other business. Let's hope years later there is a happy reunion or at least a letter from them.
